Africa must change its maritime relationship with the world
Published On 7 Jun, 2017

Africa needs to engage on equal terms with the rest of the world in the maritime industry, according to the director general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (Nimasa), Dakuku Peterside.

Speaking at the Nor-Shipping 2017 maritime conference in Lillestrøme, Norway recently, he noted that the continent needed to change the “terms of engagement” with the rest of the world with regard to maritime business.

“We want to operate on equal terms, not lopsided terms against our own interest[s], thereby creating room for a mutually beneficial relationship,” said Peterside.

He highlighted the need to rapidly build capacity at ports and for nations in Africa to develop their own fleets in order to grow the African maritime industry.
